Esta área trata de um conjunto abrangente de temas relacionados à economia de sistemas e processos de produção, inovação, sustentabilidade, energia, gestão econômico-financeira e modelagem matemática. Dentro deste amplo espectro, o Grupo de pesquisa em Economia e Modelagem em Energia, Sustentabilidade e Inovação (EMESI) consiste em um corpo de pesquisadores que desenvolvem suas atividades tendo como base comum uma abordagem econômica de problemas de engenharia, que estimula a colaboração entre especialistas de diferentes tradições acadêmicas. 

O EMESI é articulado segundo três pilares: Energia, Sustentabilidade e Inovação, os quais são sustentados por técnicas de modelagem quantitativa, qualitativa e econômica.

Pilar 1 - Economia e modelagem da energia

Dentro desta linha são realizadas pesquisas sobre vários tópicos que fazem parte da economia da energia e que incluem: mercados de energia, regulação, efeitos macroeconômicos, microeconômicos e sociais do desenvolvimento de novos mercados (e.g. novos leilões de eletricidade e mercados de carbono) e políticas governamentais para o setor de energia. Esse pilar analisa aspectos atrelados à transição energética como energias renováveis e não renováveis, captura e armazenamento de carbono (CCS) e novas tecnologias e políticas para redução de emissões visando alcançar a descarbonização da matriz energética. Temos um sólido conhecimento de métodos quantitativos usados para análise de dados, decisão na presença de incerteza, previsão, simulação e teoria de economia e finanças.

Pilar 2 - Economia e modelagem da sustentabilidade

Esta área envolve abordagens e modelos que apoiam o crescimento econômico de longo prazo levando em consideração os aspectos sociais e ambientais. Estuda-se a conexão entre sustentabilidade e outras áreas como economia ambiental, economia das organizações,  economia regional, educação, energia e recursos naturais.  Questões relacionadas ao uso da terra, a cadeias de suprimentos do agronegócio, ao impacto socioeconômico do crescimento agrícola são tópicos tratados pelos pesquisadores desta área, por meio de abordagens qualitativas e quantitativas.

Pilar 3 - Economia da inovação

A Pesquisa realizada em Economia da Inovação trata da interface entre criatividade, cultura, economia e tecnologia digital, em particular a aplicação da criatividade para a geração de valor social e econômico-financeiro, em setores como o da produção de audiovisual e jogos digitais, pela identificação de ideias inovadoras para geração de empregos e renda, criação de capital intelectual e promoção de desenvolvimento humano e inclusão social.
